Sinkhole Swallows Two Shops at Gas Station in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement

CCTV footage shows a sudden ground collapse inside a gas station, where a sinkhole opens and swallows two small shops located on the premises. People inside the shops are seen disappearing as the ground gives way.

The incident occurred on January 31, 2026, in the Fifth Settlement area east of Cairo, Egypt. Authorities said the subsidence reached a depth of around 15 meters and caused the complete collapse of two stores, one selling flowers and the other sweets.

According to initial inspections, the collapse was linked to excavation work at a nearby construction site, which weakened the ground beneath the gas station. Two people were injured and taken to New Cairo Hospital for treatment. Emergency teams secured the area, and authorities launched an investigation to prevent further incidents.
